How Ambercite has transformed patent Discovery

If you’re still relying solely on traditional patentability search databases, you’re probably losing a lot of valuable time, and, most importantly, missing critical patents. Having identified the problems with conventional searching years ago, we're determined to find a more accurate, accessible and faster way of patent research and landscaping.

Diverse talents, inspired vision

We founded the company in 2010, based on the ideas of founder Doris Spielthenner. With her background in the application of advanced social network analytics, she realised that the same principles could be applied to disrupt the status quo of patent searching and analysis. Other co-founders contributed backgrounds in:

  • Video gaming (for intuitive interfaces)
  • Big data analytics (for far-reaching, real time insights)
  • Patent law and practice

This ideal combination was the perfect foundation for creating the unique technology that’s today’s Ambercite.

How is Ambercite so different?

Standard patent searching is usually based on keywords and classification codes. While this approach can be a good starting point, it relies on complete accuracy in choosing the actual search terms. So you’ll no doubt be aware that the whole process can very easily become corrupted from the start, resulting in important patents being missed.

By contrast, Ambercite’s patent search tools starts with the collective wisdom of thousands of patent professionals:

  • Each patent citation is an expert opinion of at least one patent expert that two patents are similar, regardless of keywords or classification codes
  • By applying advanced algorithms to the ~150 million patent citations in our data base we’re able to leverage off these opinions to help you find the most similar and relevant patents in your area of interest.

The great news is that you can use Ambercite as a stand alone tool, or to extend and strengthen the results of your traditional searching. Either way, this extraordinary technology gives you far greater confidence in the accuracy of your searches.

The Ambercite technology evolution

Our initial focus on patent landscaping was through our Network Patent Analysis (NPA) service. This attracted broad global acclaim, including publication in Nature Biotechnology http://www.nature.com/nbt/  Then, in response to customer requests for an equally powerful tool for day to day patent searching, we developed Amberscope. This uniquely interactive and visual search engine led us to Cluster Searching, and, more recently Ambercite Ai.

While Ambercite Ai is our most powerful patent search tool so far, you’ll find it amazingly simple to use. API products are also available.

Gavan Farley

Gavan Farley

A general management executive, Gavan has wide international experience in a variety of industries, including hotels and tourism, engineering, factory automation and financial services. Holding both Australian and US citizenship, he’s an experienced public company director and corporate adviser, with a particular interest in early stage technology companies. Gavan has worked behind the scenes with Ambercite for some time, and is now leading the company on its remarkable growth trajectory.

Senior Vice-President, Business Development

As well as his above role, Mike also acts as an IP economic consultant to our partner firm, Griffith Hack. To the great benefit of client projects he brings extensive knowledge and experience of IP management, as well as more traditional forms of patent analysis. Mike has advanced degrees and backgrounds in chemical engineering and IP law, and has studied and worked in New Zealand, Sweden, Finland and Australia. He’s published in the areas of chemical engineering, patent management, patent value and the use of patent data in a wide range of publications and forums, and has presented on patent analysis at conferences worldwide. Outside of work, when not helping out at his local junior athletics club, Mike loves riding – anything on two wheels.

 

Ben Palmer

Ben Palmer

After completing a degree in computer science and a Master of Artificial Intelligence in England and France, Ben started his own games development company. He successfully created an original franchise, selling over a million units and employing more than 140 staff. He and a small team have also built a virtual super computer from a group of Sony PS3 consoles. The latter processes large amounts of data in order to spot and report subtle anomalies in the movement of aircraft in real time. It beat over thirty other solutions in military trials. Ben’s other passions include growing very hot chilli peppers – he’s always looking for victims silly enough to try them.

 

Gary Johnson

Gary Johnson

Gary brings a special blend of industry experience, sales and marketing savvy and a deep understanding of patent analytics to his leadership of Ambercite’s North American operations. This also encompasses business development. He specializes in selling web-based services on an enterprise wide basis, primarily to R & D and intellectual property experts. Gary has worked for companies ranging from global organizations to small private entities, but he always prefers working with those that are primed for expansion, and powered by innovation. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University, and holds an MBA in Marketing from The George Washington University. Gary helps maintain his work/life balance by directing a local youth basketball club in a voluntary capacity.

 

Doris Spielthenner

Doris Spielthenner

Doris developed NPA™ patent analysis after recognizing the potential to identify key patents and companies through a systematic analysis of their citation linkages. She first became interested in network analysis shortly after completing her master’s degree in communications and international business. Doris has worked in data analytics for a range of sectors, including pharmaceutical, financial services, law enforcement and government in Europe, the US and Australia. She’s also published in a number of business journals. She was a founding partner of FAS.research Austria and its US subsidiary, before joining PriceWaterhouseCoopers, where she advised on customer analytics. Besides working with all types of data, she even invented the concept for a reality TV series based on social networks. This has been shown in Germany and Austria.

TrademarkVision

A fellow Australian startup we collaborate with TrademarkVision mostly around market education of improved IP search tools. TrademarkVision is an online trademark service which uses image recognition to simplify and improve trademark searching and monitoring. Currently, trademarks are searched by describing a logo using words or codes, which can be very subjective and generate a lot of irrelevant results while missing relevant ones.

TrademarkVision's image recognition technology solves that issue by matching based on visual similarity. The company has been commercialising award-winning image recognition technology developed through years of computer vision research at NICTA. It’s CEO Sandra Mau said “With the large number of logos and other brand images being generated daily, text search is not sufficient to secure a brand. Our vision is to grow our Australian image search tech innovation into a global standard.”
